Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is a relatively new face in Bangladesh's winter vegetable market — Insaf's Quick Boss variety is available.

Kohlrabi is low in calories and a good source of fiber and vitamin C. It's the swollen round stem that's eaten as the vegetable.

Growing it in Bangladesh

Sowing time
Quick Boss is sown from August to November, and the first bulbs are ready for harvest 30–35 days after transplanting.
Weather & soil
Kohlrabi prefers cool weather and loose, well-drained soil, making the winter (rabi) season its best growing window. In hot weather the stem can quickly turn woody and fibrous.
Care
  • Harvest the stem while it's still small and tender — left too long, it turns fibrous
  • Spacing plants well helps the stem swell properly
  • Water regularly, but never let water stand at the base of the plant
  • Keeping the bed weed-free helps the plant stay healthy
